It wouldn’t be surprising if you ask “Who is Jasmine Thar?” It doesn’t look like much media attention has been given to this child; I searched her name using Google and there weren’t many links on this story.
Jasmine Thar was a sixteen-year-old girl who was shot and killed December 23, 2011:
Thar was shot and killed near midday Dec. 23, while she was standing outside her godmother’s house in Chadbourn. Her godmother and a friend were injured by the bullet, which came from the Remington rifle owned by a man who lives across the street.
That man, 23-year-old James Anthony Blackwell, says the gun went off while he was cleaning it. There have been a number of lawsuits in recent years about the Remington 700 rifle firing without the trigger being pulled (Source: Charlotte Observer).
Now, my first question is this: Why was this man allegedly cleaning a loaded gun? I don’t know much about guns and their upkeep, but I would think that it is not recommended that one cleans their gun while it is loaded because the thing could go off, right? So Blackwell’s explanation already sounds weak to me.
Thar, 16, and two other women injured by a single bullet Dec. 23 are all African-American. James Anthony Blackwell, 23, who held the rifle that fired that bullet, is white.
It’s clear the bullet the killed Thar was fired inside Blackwell’s house on East Third Avenue and went through a window before it crossed the street.
Thar’s godmother, Treka McMillian, 42; and McMillian’s niece, Jahmesha McMillian, 17, were both injured by the bullet that killed Thar outside the McMillian family home as the family prepared for a pre-Christmas shopping trip to Myrtle Beach (Source: Fay Observer).
Another thing that makes me side-eye Blackwell is a claim made by Treka McMillian. She claims, in a MoveOn letter that is making it’s rounds on Tumblr:
Because he claims it was an accident, the police let him go—despite the fact that he admits he fired the shot and police found a Confederate flag and Nazi literature in his home.
So this guy allegedly has a Confederate flag AND Nazi literature? If this is true, then the writing is on the wall, in big bold letters, and I’m not illiterate. According to The Charlotte Observer, the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are both looking into this case. It’s important that there be a through investigation into this, otherwise people are going to go around under the assumption that as long as I claim “It was an accident”, they can shoot people to death and face no consequences.
